… 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
The BIBLE – 1. John 5:4;
A very bold claim that John makes this morning. Who among us could claim to have overcome the world with all its challenges, temptations, and troubles? No one! But John isn't claiming this at all. John names a prerequisite for overcoming the world: they must be born of GOD. Our LORD JESUS, the GOD of all gods and LORD of all lords, has overcome the lords and powers of the world. Satan and all his demons have found their master in Him, CHRIST. JESUS shares His victory over hell, death, and the devil with us when we entrust ourselves to Him in faith.
What is the state of the hearts of JESUS' disciples, of those who overcome the world? We read: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. (1. John 5:1) As disciples of JESUS, we love GOD, the CREATOR of heaven and earth, and in the same way, our LORD JESUS. None other than GOD Himself emptied His divinity and lived among us humans in the form of a servant, in the form of JESUS. I make no distinction whatsoever between GOD, the FATHER, the origin of all things, and JESUS CHRIST, GOD Himself in human form.
Love for GOD is shown in lived love for our neighbor. We read further: This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome. (1. John 5:2.3) When GOD's HOLY SPIRIT dwells in our hearts, it becomes our heartfelt desire to pass on to our fellow human beings the love we ourselves have experienced. With GOD's help, it is truly no longer difficult to keep GOD's commandments, for they can all be summarized in the one commandment of love for G’OD and our neighbor.
Therefore, once again, and with most grateful confidence in faith, disciples of JESUS proclaim: … 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. How many chains of people dependent on alcohol, nicotine, or various drugs and addictions has JESUS already broken? I remember a young man who was severely addicted to heroin for eight years and was freed overnight through the step of faith. JESUS also helps us overcome the fear of death because He has given us the promise of eternal life. Only those who take the step of faith, only those who consciously entrust themselves in faith to our GOOD SHEPHERD, JESUS CHRIST, will have this experience.
