I see this happen with my students all the time. They do great during lessons. They speak freely, remember the vocabulary, and generally feel that everything is working just fine.
Then the real test comes when they actually need their English: they have an interview, travel to another country, or join an important work call. Afterwards, they come back and say: “I couldn’t speak at all.”
This happens so often that I had to adapt my lessons around it a long time ago. So let’s look at why it happens and what you can actually do about it.
The short version is that stress consumes mental resources.
Instead of simply listening and responding, you start monitoring yourself:
Did I understand them correctly? Is my grammar right? Do I sound stupid? Why can’t I remember this word? They’re waiting. I need to say something.
The more attention goes into this internal panic, the less remains for speaking. Stress doesn't break your English, it makes your brain focus on self-assessment instead of the conversation.
So, how do you deal with it?
First, the bad news: you can’t make your skills completely immune to stress. If the situation matters enough, your performance will probably get worse.
The good news is that the size of that drop isn’t set in stone.
The first thing is to stress-test your English occasionally. Practice with time pressure, unexpected questions, interruptions, and situations where you don’t know exactly what is coming. If your English only ever operates in lessons that your teacher is trying to make as comfortable as possible, you don’t really know what will survive outside them.
The second thing is to prepare one simple rule for an upcoming stressful situation and drill it into your head. Preferably make it conversation-related and not grammar-related.
For example:
I will start with the main fact and add the details afterwards.
Not ten use cases for Present Perfect Continuous. Not “I’ll try to use advanced vocabulary and avoid every grammar mistake.” One clear instruction gives your brain something useful to focus on instead of allowing it to jump between 20 rules in every sentence.
You probably won’t speak as well under stress the first time you have to use English for real. But, with repeated exposure, your brain will recognize that no one is going to eat you if you make a tense mistake. And you will stop stressing as English becomes just another regular thing. That is when your English will start to shine.
