When Technology Is No Longer a Competitive Advantage

Tech markets often follow the same recurring cycle.

Initially, a new technology is complex, available to only a few, and provides a significant advantage all on its own.

Then, knowledge spreads, off-the-shelf infrastructure emerges, development costs drop, and the number of competitors grows.

What was an innovation yesterday gradually turns into a commodity – a feature readily available to the market.

This process is called commoditization.

We've already seen this in the blockchain industry. Creating a token, a wallet, an exchange, or a standalone DeFi service is much easier today than it was a few years ago. Features are copied, fees are dropping, and some services are becoming practically free.

Now, a similar process is happening very rapidly in AI: off-the-shelf models, APIs, and infrastructure are drastically lowering the barrier to entry for creating new products.

This is where a major shift occurs.

Value is increasingly shifting from the technology itself to the ability to build a sustainable business around it and defend your market position.

So the question:

«Can we build this?»

becomes just the first.

Beyond that, the business must continually ask much tougher questions:

– what real problem the product solves;
– whether there's real paying demand;
– why users choose it specifically;
– how much it costs to acquire and retain a customer;
– how unit economics are evolving;
– which distribution channels are working;
– what will remain a competitive advantage once others can replicate any single feature.

Early on, it's impossible to have definitive answers to some of these questions.

What matters is something else – how quickly a company gets market feedback, spots changes, and adapts its product and business strategy.

This is where the line is drawn between technology, product, and business.

Technology can be built.
A product must be used.
A business must be able to create value and sustainable economics.

As technology becomes commoditized, the focus increasingly shifts to barriers to entry and defensive advantages – moats.

In the payments business, these can include licenses, card and banking infrastructure, compliance, liquidity, partnerships, distribution, a user base, and network effects.

In AI – proprietary data, integration into business processes, and access to customers.

For a marketplace – an established network of sellers and buyers.

This is exactly why DigiU is building an ecosystem model.

It allows us to combine capital, technology, users, global distribution, expertise, partnerships, and an investment portfolio.

The more complex the combination of these resources, the higher the barrier to simple replication.

WebWisePay is a perfect example of this logic.

A crypto wallet or virtual card on its own is no longer a unique competitive advantage.

WebWisePay's objective is much more complex – to gradually build a cross-border payment infrastructure that brings together cards, crypto assets, mobile money, fiat currencies, QR payments, users across different countries, compliance, liquidity, affiliate integrations, and B2B use cases. Blockchain and AI technologies aren't businesses in their own right; they're used as tools within the product.

Some of these elements are already up and running, while others are in later stages of development. The product itself must continually test demand, economics, and scaling scenarios in the real market – and pivot its strategy when necessary.

It's exactly at this systemic level that a more sustainable competitive advantage is increasingly built – not in a single feature, but in a combination of resources that's much harder to replicate as a whole.

That's why the DigiU ecosystem approach isn't just about having a few different products.

It's an opportunity to bring together capital, expertise, technology, and a global community to take on more complex projects with a higher barrier to entry.
