Second Leg, Same Fuel
BTC extends past $77k on a second short flush, but the bid still leans on covering, not fresh spot.
BTC pushed to a fresh $77,119 high, up 6.2% on the day to $77,576 and 21% on the week, extending the squeeze rather than resetting it. Character remains the tell: RSI(14) at 85, the most stretched reading in months, with spot 11.8% above its 200-day for the first sustained reclaim since November.
The mechanism is unchanged from Thursday. Roughly $1.22B in liquidations ran over 24h, both BTC ($704m) and ETH ($208m) more than 80% shorts, as each new high ran another stop cluster. XRP (+18%) and BCH (+23%) led the alt catch-up, a rotation into a market where bears keep getting force-covered. ETF flows added the one non-mechanical leg: $606m into spot BTC funds and $221m into ETH on Thursday, Ether's largest daily inflow since October.
Options frame the caution beneath the tape. BTC vol sits at 40.9, dead middle of its year, while ETH vol is at the 19th percentile and skew still pays a modest premium for downside. Dealer hedging now turns supportive up toward $78-80k, where positioning concentrates. Two sessions of short-covering have done the lifting. The open question stays whether spot demand shows up to hold $75k, or whether the covered book leaves nothing underneath.
