Meta fired thousands of humans. Replaced them with AI. Then the AI handed over your Instagram account to criminals.A flaw in Meta’s AI-powered account recovery tool allowed attackers to hijack accounts by manipulating the chatbot into forwarding password reset codes — with zero verification required. The vulnerability stemmed from the AI’s logic layer having no rate limiting or authentication enforcement before processing reset requests. Attackers targeted rare “OG” handles like @hey and @jowo — accounts worth millions — flipping them through private Telegram channels before Meta could respond. Meanwhile, Meta has already laid off thousands while ramping AI capital expenditure to as high as $145 billion in 2026. Roughly 7,000 employees were shifted into AI roles while management layers were eliminated, affecting nearly 20% of the workforce.

The takeaway is brutal: The exploit has been patched. Meta gutted its human security teams, deployed half-baked AI in their place, and users paid the price.
