On July 20, 2026, cybercriminals successfully hijacked and defaced the official website of Kenyan President William Ruto. The attackers completely wiped the homepage, replacing state communications with derogatory demands and a public cryptocurrency wallet address requesting a ransom of 5 Bitcoins—roughly $317,000 USD.
The hackers threatened to leak sensitive internal government documents if the ransom remained unpaid. In response, state cybersecurity teams immediately took the network offline to contain the security breach. As of July 20, emergency containment measures and forensic investigations remain actively underway to trace the attackers' digital footprint and fully restore the secure state infrastructure.
