The first two lines of your proposal decide whether a client opens it or skips it.
When a client checks proposals, Upwork only displays a two-line preview snippet before they click to expand. If you start with "Dear Hiring Manager" or "I am an experienced web developer," you blend in with automated bots and generic templates.
Clients look for immediate proof that you read their job post. Start right away with a specific observation about their project requirements.
How to structure your opening lines:
👉 Mention the core problem from their job post in sentence one.
👉 State your practical fix or technical approach in sentence two.
👉 Ask one targeted question about a key workflow or project detail.
Skip long bios, and portfolio links at the beginning. Put the actual solution first. Once you win the preview snippet, the client will open your full proposal and review the rest.
