Fresh concrete must be tested before and during placement to make sure it has the required workability, consistency, uniformity, and air content. These tests help identify problems early—before they become defects in the hardened concrete. 👷♂️🏗️
1️⃣ Slump Test — የSlump ምርመራ
The slump test is one of the most common field tests for fresh concrete. It gives an indication of the concrete’s consistency and workability and helps determine whether the mix is suitable for placing and compacting.
👉 Too much slump may indicate excessive water or other issues, while very low slump can make placement and compaction difficult.

2️⃣ Workability Tests — የWorkability ምርመራዎች
Workability describes how easily fresh concrete can be mixed, transported, placed, compacted and finished without segregation or excessive bleeding.
👉 The appropriate test depends on the type and consistency of concrete.
Workability ማለት ኮንክሪት ሳይለያይ (Segregation) እና ከመጠን በላይ ውሃ ሳይለቅ (Bleeding) በቀላሉ ሊቀላቀል፣ ሊጓጓዝ፣ ሊዘረጋ እና ሊጠበቅ (Compaction) የሚችልበትን ችሎታ ያመለክታል።
3️⃣ Compacting Factor Test — የCompacting Factor ምርመራ
This test is particularly useful for low-workability concrete. It measures the degree of compaction achieved under standardized conditions and provides an indication of workability.
👉 It can be more sensitive than the slump test for stiff concrete.
4️⃣ Setting Time — የSetting Time ምርመራ
Setting time indicates how long the cementitious material takes to begin and substantially complete setting. It is important for determining available time for placing and finishing concrete.
👉 In practice, setting characteristics are commonly assessed through cement/paste tests, while concrete behavior can also be monitored using appropriate methods depending on the specification.
5️⃣ Air Content Test — የAir Content ምርመራ
This test determines the amount of air present in fresh concrete.
👉 Air content is especially important in air-entrained concrete because the correct amount of entrained air can improve durability against freeze-thaw exposure. Excessive unintended air, however, can reduce strength.
