☄Concrete defects can reduce strength, durability, appearance, and service life if they are not identified and controlled during construction. Here are some common defects every civil engineer and site professional should know:
1. Honeycombing – Voids on the concrete surface caused mainly by poor compaction or improper placement. It can reduce strength and durability.
2. Segregation – Separation of coarse aggregate from the cement mortar, often due to excess water or improper handling and mixing. It produces non-uniform concrete and weak zones.
3. Bleeding – Water rises to the concrete surface during or after finishing, commonly due to excessive water content. It can result in a weak surface and poor bond.
4. Cracks – Cracking may occur due to shrinkage, temperature changes, or structural stresses. Structural cracks require proper engineering assessment.
5. Spalling – Pieces of concrete break away from the surface, often associated with reinforcement corrosion, environmental exposure, or freeze-thaw action.
6. Efflorescence – White, powdery salt deposits appear on the concrete surface due to moisture movement and soluble salts. It is mainly an appearance issue but may indicate moisture movement.
