The process commences when large snow blocks are cut from hard-packed snow using a snow saw. Next, these blocks are arranged in a circular pattern measuring 4 metres in diameter. The blocks are then stacked in a spiral pattern – the lowest layer consists of large blocks, while progressively smaller blocks are used in the upper rows, gradually forming a secure dome.
In the following stages, a final block is placed into the opening at the top to lock the dome securely. Loose snow is then spread over the exterior of the dome to fill any gaps between the blocks and improve insulation. Following this, air holes are drilled inside the igloo to provide ventilation. In the final stage, the completed igloo, which stands around 2 metres high, is a fully functional snow shelter.
