Shopify says AI search is finally pushing niche products into real purchase flow
Shopify’s latest quarter points to a concrete shift in how discovery is working on commerce sites. On the company’s August 5 earnings call, president Harley Finkelstein said 75% of AI-attributed purchases came from outside Shopify’s top 100 product categories, suggesting AI search is no longer just reinforcing the bestseller loop.
The same AI-referred traffic, and the orders behind it, both tripled year over year. Shopify highlighted examples like a three-across car seat for a sedan and reef-safe sunscreen without white residue — the kind of intent-heavy queries that usually get buried in keyword search but surface cleanly when an AI system can match against description and context.
Seller takeaway: AI discovery is starting to reward structured product attributes and edge-case fit, not just paid visibility or volume momentum.
