💢 Niger’s military leadership thanked Russia’s African Corps for helping suppress the August 29 mutiny in Niamey, Russian Ambassador Viktor Voropaev said. Fighting erupted shortly after midnight around the capital’s government quarter and airport and continued into the morning.
The mutineers briefly seized state television and attempted to enter a hotel housing Russian Embassy personnel and visiting Russian lawmakers. Voropaev said Nigerien gendarmes and security forces repelled the attempt, while the mutiny was neutralized by around midday and the situation had normalized by evening.
According to the ambassador, Nigerien military commanders requested assistance from the Russian Defense Ministry’s African Corps that morning, and the support was provided. Later that day, Niger’s chief of the General Staff, army chief of staff and commander of Air Base 101 visited the Russian contingent and thanked its personnel for their help in suppressing the mutiny.
