Norwegian authorities have seized the Russian ship at the request of the Ukrainian state company "Naftogaz" to ensure the fulfillment of the Russian Federation's unmet obligations regarding compensation for the company's expropriated property during the occupation of Crimea.
In April 2023, an arbitration court in The Hague ordered the Russian Federation to pay "Naftogaz" $4.22 billion plus interest and court costs as compensation for assets confiscated in Crimea, but Moscow has not done so.
The decision to confiscate was made by the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court on August 31. The ship "Professor Molchanov" belonged to Russia and was used for commercial expedition cruises, including to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.
According to the court's decision, the ship cannot leave its current location. The Governor of Svalbard is obligated to take necessary measures to prevent the movement of the ship.
