“Why do people above the age of 65 fall so much more? And by the way, why do women fall disproportionately more than men? Why do falls happen?”“Most People Over 65 Don't Fall Because They're Clumsy.
Falls aren't random.
They happen because your fast-twitch muscle fibers (Type 2A) vanish over time & most people don't train to preserve them.
Reactivity?
Gone.
Muscle mass?
Shrinking.
Bone density?
Dropping, especially in women.
Why do women fall more?
Because women naturally have less muscle & lower bone density, making them more vulnerable to fractures as they age.
But here's the good news:
You can reverse it.
Heavy strength training is the antidote.
Yes, even in your 60s, 70s & beyond.
Just look up the Lift More Study by Belinda Beck, they didn't just stop bone loss, they increased bone density through lifting.
This isn't "for the young."
It's for the smart.
And it could save your life.
Bottom line:
Strength training isn't optional after 65.
It's the difference between independence & injury.”
“the more muscle mass you have on your body, the more resilient you’re going to be to anything that comes your way; whether it’s something acute like an upper respiratory illness or whether something is more chronic like the big C. You’re going to do better if you have MUSCLE MASS on your body.”➡️People often say that "muscle weighs more than fat'. Obviously, this cannot be true - A kilo is a kilo! What they really mean is a kilo of muscle is denser & so takes up less space than a kilo of fat.
➡️So, when you lose the fat but gain muscle, you may stay the same weight - but still get smaller because you've reduced inches
➡️5 pounds of fat burns 20 calories a day. 1 lb of fat burns 5 calories.
➡️5 pounds of muscle burns 250 calories a day. 1 Ib muscle burns 50 calories.
➡️MUSCLE
👉🏻1 pound of muscle burns more calories per day and takes up less space
👉🏻EARN muscle with consistent activity and exercise
➡️FAT
👉🏻1 pound of fat takes up more space & a person with a higher body fat percentage will appear larger
👉🏻GAIN body fat by eating too many calories & not getting enough physical activity
💚Yes, there are always exceptions to this but MUSCLE MASS is very important and it does help significantly, especially as you age. The only way to build muscle is weight resistance. Resistance training also helps your lymphatics, helps your blood and oxygen flow, helps your fascia, it’s just so important to overall health & longevity and disease prevention!
💚I take this very seriously & I did a test on myself, in the last month, I increased my lifting weight by 5 lbs in at least one exercise every gym day, I alternate upper & lower body days. This made a huge difference in my muscle mass. I’ve been going to the gym for almost a year, I’ve only released 7 lbs but I’m physically so much smaller because muscle is much smaller than fat! My balance is way better, aches & pains are gone and I feel better about myself and my health. My point is that, lifting heavy helped me gain way more muscle faster!
