NTSB officials provided the final on scene press briefing tonight on the investigation into the runway excursion of 21 Air Flight 7598 at Miami International Airport on Sunday, which left five people dead and five others injured. The Boeing 767 cargo aircraft overran the end of Runway 30 while landing after a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Investigators said data from the final 30 seconds of the flight data recorder shows the crew released the brakes and increased engine power to a level consistent with initiating a go around for approximately four seconds before reapplying the brakes, which remained applied through the end of the recording.
The NTSB expects the on scene phase of the investigation to continue for approximately one week as investigators collect additional evidence and conduct interviews. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while the full investigation and final report could take more than a year.
