Why should CAPF aspirants revisit this?
UPSC often revisits themes, not necessarily the same questions. A theme asked in 2024 has now gained fresh relevance after the Supreme Court recognised “loss of domestic care” as a separate head of compensation and fixed ₹30,000/month as a basic minimum for relevant motor-accident claims. The Court also recognised homemakers as “nation builders.”
For CAPF Paper-II, don't prepare this merely as a question on housework. Broaden it to “Unpaid Care Work & Care Economy” and connect it with:
Women & Society: gender roles, patriarchy and dignity of homemakers.
Gender equality: unequal care burden and women’s participation in the workforce.
Economy: invisible labour, care economy and valuation of unpaid work.
Social justice: recognition, social security and dignity of unpaid caregivers.
Governance: childcare, eldercare, public infrastructure and work-life balance.
Current affairs: SC judgment + Time Use Survey + international developments.
Global perspective: SDG 5.4, which calls for recognition and valuation of unpaid care and domestic work.
The larger lesson:
Don't prepare PYQs in isolation. Prepare the theme behind the PYQ and keep updating that theme with current affairs. A 2024 question on housework can today be approached through care economy, women’s workforce participation, gender justice, judicial recognition and the changing role of the State.
