Siddhartha's Victory Over Mara's Armies ☸️
As recorded in The Padhana Sutta, from Khuddaka Nikaya scripture of The Pali Canon, Before the dawn of His Enlightenment beside the Neranjara River, Mara - The Evil One approached the striving Bodhisattva Siddhartha. He did not arrive first with thunder, but with words that sounded almost compassionate:
"You are near death. Live, and perform meritorious deeds. The path of striving towards enlightenment is too difficult.", said The Evil One.
Yet The Buddha-to-be recognised the hidden voice of negligence.
He named Mara's armies one by one:
- Sensual desire,
- Discontent,
- Hunger and thirst,
- Craving,
- Laziness,
- Fear,
- Doubt,
- Stubbornness,
- The hunger for gain and honour,
- Self-praise, and contempt for others.
These forces still march through the human heart. Mara is not encountered only in ancient stories; he appears whenever Fear whispers, "Turn back," Craving says, "Just once more," or Pride asks to be admired.
The Bodhisattva Siddhartha answered not with anger, but with immovable resolve.
Faith was His strength, mindfulness His guard, concentration His steadiness, and wisdom His weapon. He vowed to break Mara's army as a stone shatters an unbaked clay bowl.
Mara The Evil One could find no opening in that awakened vigilance. At last, sorrowful and defeated, his lute fell from his hands.
Liberation begins wherever the heart stops obeying its oldest fears. 🙏
