Blue-Tongued Skink (Tiliqua scincoides) - A Fascinating Reptile
The blue-tongued skink is a large lizard, growing up to 50 cm in length. Apart from its unforgettable blue tongue, it has smooth, fish-like scales with a bony layer of plates underneath.
Scientists still can't fully explain the purpose of this unique tongue coloration. Two popular theories exist:
Firstly, the blue tongue combined with a pink mouth looks quite menacing and can scare off potential threats. When threatened, skinks puff up their bodies and turn their heads towards the source of danger. They then open their mouths wide, stick out their tongues, and hiss, pretending to be a venomous snake. At this point, the skink may even move towards the predator, attack, or bite.
Secondly, the tongue serves as a symbol of strength and superiority. During the breeding season, a male skink displays his tongue to rivals, hoping to gain the upper hand.
