📰 NEWS | Venezuelan Gov’t and US-Backed Opposition Faction to Renew Supreme Court
Venezuela’s government and representatives of the defunct 2015 National Assembly announced agreements after concluding a first round of talks.
The parties agreed to launch a new nomination process for all Supreme Court justices and establish a council to review nominees’ credentials and constitutional requirements.
They also pledged to promote the recovery of Venezuela’s gold reserves frozen at the Bank of England, establishing mechanisms for transparency, traceability, and auditing in their use to support those affected by the June 24 earthquakes. The agreement also includes commitments on housing, electricity, healthcare, and debris removal.
The issue of the National Electoral Council was not included in the joint document, despite opposition representatives previously identifying electoral reform as a priority.
The delegations are scheduled to meet again in mid-September.
