Venezuela’s government and an opposition faction formally began a new US-backed dialogue initiative focused on the country’s electoral and judicial authorities.
Government negotiators led by National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and an opposition delegation headed by Dinorah Figuera agreed on a methodology and negotiating principles including mutual recognition, political equality, human and political rights, and verifiable commitments.
The Trump administration welcomed the talks and described them as part of a “three-phase plan” culminating with a “political transition.” The process has also generated criticism from other opposition factions and grassroots Chavista organizations.
