Self-sufficiency, Space and Freedom
The theoretical concept of Lebensraum (living room), is the territory which a group, state, or nation believes is needed for its natural development. The German author Hans Grimm explored this idea in his epic novel "Volk ohne Raum" (People without Space) first published in 1926 and nearly 1300 pages long. Drawing from his observations of Germans in Europe and German South West Africa, as well as the historical contexts of the Anglo-Boer War and World War I, Grimm emphasized that German land is that which Germans own, inhabit, and cultivate. He illustrated through the experiences of his characters the proper place of patriotism, the need for self-sustainable agriculture, the need for healthy living conditions, and at same time, the negative consequences of losing sovereignty to foreign powers and the futility of the rat race lifestyle.
