4454 - 4460โบ Gold, and Silver even more so, were sold off heavily today after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh tried to sound hawkish - and was also perceived that way - while indicating, among other things, that the Fed still has โwork to do.โ Market participants interpreted this as a sign that the Fed is moving closer to tighter monetary policy again in order to accelerate the disinflation process.
โบ Warsh said that the Fed is currently not confident that underlying inflation is returning to its 2% target. This was the clearest he has come so far to acknowledging that rate hikes may be necessary to further reduce price pressures. Some of his colleagues, however, had already expressed this view much more clearly and had accordingly voted for rate hikes at previous meetings.
โบ We saw expectations for a September rate hike rise significantly, which also strengthened the USD. Swap markets are now pricing in around a 56% probability of a Fed rate hike in September - compared with 36% before Warshโs comments.
โบ Part of the sharp sell-off in Gold, however, was also driven by panic selling. We are taking a small position into the upcoming week. USD buying and gains have now started to cool, giving us a window to re-enter.
โบ We made several small but all successful Gold trades today - including our two Gold positions from today ๐ธ, which we closed before renewed selling pressure appeared - and we generally continue to expect demand for precious metals to remain intact.
