We had expected profit taking - particularly in the chip sector after yesterday’s positive pre-market and trading open - and we could hardly have been more right. We still have a SHORT position in AMD, unless it was already closed in pre-market.

🔹 AMD (-2.6%) - opens sharply lower near 459 and easily triggers our TP + gap - for a very large profit. Congratulations! My position unfortunately already closed in pre-market.

Stocks have a weak start into September as higher oil prices, bond yields back at decade highs as well as concerns that central banks will hike again weighs on sentiment. We see that institutional portfolios to typical risk-off rebalancing - meaning that we will see the current weakness in growth / higher risk assets to remain for a bit longer. There is room for a correction after August was overall a positive month - in particular for AI / tech stocks. We see upside for defensive sectors such as health, pharmaceutical but also consumer staples, as well as further short-term gains in energy.

SK Hynix and Samsung ended today’s session in Korea with gains, providing some relief. However, I am not buying into this move and expect the current headwinds to persist for a bit longer. Part of the gains in Korean chipmakers - particularly memory stocks - came on the back of MU’s strong performance yesterday, when MU closed 2.8% higher in New York as one of the strongest performers. SKHY also gained 2.2% yesterday in New York. MU opens around 1.5% lower today, giving back most of yesterday’s gains, and we expect further losses. Within the Tech sector, AAPL should outperform - a potential buy at the NYSE open.

Micron is facing a potential strike in Taiwan, as unions representing its employees are pushing for higher bonuses and a larger share of company profits. The unions represent nearly 10,000 employees at Micron’s facilities in Taoyuan and Taichung - around two-thirds of the workforce across those two locations.

We also expect profit taking in TSLA after the stock significantly outperformed in August and gained 18% - including +5.5% yesterday alone, its strongest trading day since early July. We mainly saw buying ahead of Tesla’s Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas, on September 3 - and Tesla is now theoretically in a bullish pattern, which could become a trap for retail investors today. Higher oil prices are also generally a tailwind for TSLA. However, after the very strong August performance and yesterday’s 5.5% surge, we see room for some cooling. TSLA opens around 1.6% lower near 361.50 and we go SHORT. I already sold TSLA in pre-market.

► In general, we are looking for good entries in defensive stocks. The Dow Jones also has room for a rebound and should outperform the S&P 500 and, even more so, the Nasdaq 100 for now.

Micron (MU): Multiply your “standard (EUR/USD)” position size by approx. 25–30x (2,500%–3,000%) – 2/3 position size.

Tesla (TSLA): Multiply your “standard (EUR/USD)” position size by approx. 50–55x (5,000%– 5,500%) – 1/2 position size.
