“Some people fall into a passive form of spirituality. They believe that surrender to divine will means not acting, not committing, not making any choices, not making any effort, and simply letting things happen or going with the flow, as if God will do everything for them.
The spiritual path does not ask us to become passive bystanders who merely observe everything. But forced personal will and mistaking surrender with having no will at all are two extreme distortions of what aligned conscious will is really all about.
Will is also one of the most important parts of inner work; it is very necessary, because without will, you cannot focus or concentrate.
There’s no capacity to stay with discomfort, and there’s no progress because you get distracted; you cannot commit, so we need to build up our will.
Many people think the spiritual path is about giving up the will, just going along with the flow. Spirituality and the concept of non-attachment have become very distorted this way.
Before the will can actually be surrendered to the divine, it has to be developed, purified, and really brought under conscious control so we’re not mechanically acting based on unconscious wounds, shadow programming, and conditioning.”
