Global bond yields are resetting higher together:
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.7880%, a 20-month high. Yahoo Finance data put its 1 September close at 4.796%, up from 4.758% the day before.
A bond yield is the return investors demand to lend to a government. It rises when bond prices fall.
Japan’s 10-year yield reached 3.00% for the first time since 1996. The UK 10-year Gilt reached 5.2341%, its highest since June 2008, while its 30-year yield reached 5.8856%, the highest since March 1998.
Renewed Middle East hostilities and higher energy costs are reviving inflation pressure. Euro-area August headline inflation rose to 3.3% from 2.9%, while energy inflation accelerated to 14.3%.
Global bond markets are repricing inflation risk together.
