In reality, absolute monogamy evolved independently across the majority of cultures worldwide because it's the only way to advance society and prevent men from slaughtering each other over women.
Unmarried men are the most violent and criminally inclined demographic, this is as true today as it ever was, and greater ingroup cooperation facilitates successful intragroup competition.
Non-absolute monogamy has very deep evolutionary roots, with biological/behavioral changes associated with monogamy occurring millions of years ago. These include higher levels of parental investment, evidence of pair bonding, lower levels of sexual dimorphism, and, in modern man, significantly reduced testicle size relative to polygamous primates.
Women benefit hugely from monogamy, arguably more than men. They receive greater paternal investment, significantly reduced risk of assault, rape, and infanticide, decreased intrasexual competition, etc.
