Crypto Speak: Layer 0
Let’s try to talk about complex technical things in simple words. You’ve probably heard of concepts like “layer-1 blockchains” and “layer-2 blockchains.” We'll break these concepts down in the coming days, but today, we’ll talk about “layer 0.”
Layer 0 in the world of cryptocurrencies is the base layer, which can be thought of as the “infrastructure of infrastructures.”
It is the layer that underpins all blockchains and cryptocurrency protocols. Layer 0 addresses the fundamental issues of connectivity and interoperability between different blockchains. It is because of the existence of this layer that blockchains can “communicate” and interact with each other.
For example, if we compare the cryptocurrency world to a house, layer 0 is the foundation and communications (plumbing, electricity) on which the house itself is built (the house being layer 1, like the Ethereum or Bitcoin blockchain).
