The tendency of human beings to copy one another is shown in the popularity of areas such as fashion and consumer goods.
To what extent do you agree?
Popularity signals quality/safety => people imitate the majority to reduce anxiety and the risk of making a wrong choice.
Аргумент 2 (против): Люди с развитым вкусом и критическим мышлением не доверяют популярности как показателю ценности и делают независимый выбор (нишевые бренды, секонд-хенд, нестандартный стиль).
People with good taste and critical thinking don't trust popularity as an indicator of value and make independent choices (niche brands, second-hand, unconventional styles).
There is an opinion that the human inclination to imitate one another is reflected in the widespread popularity of fields such as fashion and consumer goods. I would agree with this claim to a certain extent, as people tend to interpret the popularity of a product as a sign of its quality or safety, which naturally encourages them to imitate the choices of others. However, I believe this is not the only factor at play, since individuals equipped with a distinct sense of taste and critical thinking are equally capable of making independent decisions rather than simply copying others.
Admittedly, the tendency to imitate others is largely driven by a psychological need for reassurance. When a product or style has already gained widespread acceptance, consumers feel less anxious about making the wrong choice, since they can rely on the collective judgement of others rather than trust their own uncertain assessment. For instance, when choosing a new smartphone or a piece of clothing, many people simply opt for whichever brand or style is currently trending, treating its popularity as an implicit guarantee of quality and thereby avoiding the effort and risk involved in independent decision-making. In this way, imitation functions as a mental shortcut that allows people to minimise both uncertainty and the potential regret of a poor purchase.
Nevertheless, I do not fully agree that imitation is the primary force behind trends in fashion and consumer goods, as individuals with a refined sense of taste and the capacity for critical thinking are able to resist this tendency. Rather than treating popularity as a reliable indicator of value, such people carefully evaluate their personal preferences, needs and values before making a purchase, recognizing that a product's widespread appeal does not necessarily reflect its actual suitability for them. As a result, they often opt for niche brands, second-hand items or unconventional styles that reflect their individuality instead of conforming to mainstream trends. This suggests that, while the desire for reassurance undeniably drives the majority towards imitation, it is by no means the sole factor shaping consumer behaviour.
In conclusion, while I agree that the psychological comfort derived from imitation plays a considerable role in shaping people's choices in fashion and consumer goods, I do not believe it is the sole explanation for their popularity, as those with discerning taste and critical thinking are able to make individual, independent choices instead of merely following others.
