— The UN General Assembly has voted to encourage a shift away from the centuries-old Mercator world map in favor of the Equal Earth projection.The African-led initiative, spearheaded by Togo, argues that the Mercator projection significantly exaggerates land masses near the poles while making Africa appear much smaller than its true scale.
The non-binding resolution passed the General Assembly by 164 votes to one, with six abstentions.
