The Addis Ababa Health Bureau has launched an online portal for health professionals and medical facilities to apply for, renew, and verify licenses, digitizing a regulatory process that governs who can practice and which facilities can operate in the capital.
The platform, at license.aahb.gov.et, covers nine licensing services for professionals and five for health facilities. Professionals can apply for competency licenses, renew or upgrade credentials, transfer licenses issued by regional health bureaus and request good-standing and experience letters.
Facilities can apply for new licenses, renew existing ones and manage related requests through their sub-city health offices. Applicants can track their status, respond to correction requests and pay once their application reaches that stage. The public can also verify professional and facility licences without creating an account, giving employers and patients a direct way to check whether a practitioner or facility holds valid credentials.
The launch follows a restructuring of the city’s regulatory institutions. In September, the Addis Ababa City Administration transferred the licensing of health professionals and facilities, along with medico-legal and professional ethics functions, from the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority to the Health Bureau as part of a wider reorganization of city agencies.
But while the system moves applications and records online, it does not say how long approval should take.
The portal notes that submitting an application does not constitute approval, and for facilities the process still involves document reviews and premises inspections, steps that depend on administrative capacity and physical verification
