Question (138): What is the ruling from a Sharia perspective on using cannabis and other similar narcotic substances?

Answer (138): Using this type of substance requires ta'zir punishment. This is a matter directly within the authority of the qadi (Sharia judge). Even, if necessity arises, the ta'zir punishment can be escalated up to the death penalty.
