Question (146): Is it permissible from a Sharia perspective to organize engagement ceremonies and hold birthday celebrations for children?
Answer (146): If nothing contrary to Sharia principles occurs at such ceremonies, holding them is permissible. Examples of matters contrary to Sharia would include the accompaniment of music, and the mixing (ikhtilat) of non-mahram men and women together.
