I uninstalled Copilot on my laptop the day I got it. So the Copilot button I'm stuck with on my keyboard did nothing.

I'm still learning Chinese, so I had Codex make me an app where when I press the Copilot button, it instead launches a screen capture where I can select any text, it OCRs any Mandarn characters it can find, and translate it word-per-word, with an extra layer of language processing to derive contextual meanings. I can even click on a passage and have it speak it with Windows Speech.
It took like 30 mins and already more helpful than Copilot 👍

I hate people saying {industry standard} is okay. It's {bad-faith philosophy}, {hyperbolized misinformation}, and {issue of personal taste}.

I have been working on this animation project for 3 whole years now and I decided on the artstyle long ago; no resampling or antialiasing is a big part of it.

But then one day Blender decided they would entirely change their shadow sampling, causing this wrinkly dithered nonsense which ruined basically every render.

This was supposed to improve soft shadows in standard (>1 samples) Eevee renders. Which, granted, it does, but there's no way to disable it for no-antialiasing projects!

It even apparently retroactively applied to old versions of Blender since they still used the updated kernels or something

SO:
I got Codex to fork Blender 5.1.1, gate ANY noise sampling ANYTHING behind a button, and recompile the whole thing. So I did the meme and made a real-life "Unfuck the Shading" button.

And my project is saved 🎉

I love that this thought experiment meant to prove that computers can't think accidentally demonstrates that they functionally can. The whole premise of using it to arrive at the room that speaks Chinese can't speak Chinese relies primarily on the Fallacy of Composition, failing to account for emergent properties of a system.
As well as silently smuggling an insistence that there's a rigid definition of """"understanding"""", as though understanding were some physically identifiable essence rather than a purely philosophical/heuristic construct.

i think a lot of the Internet needs to realize that genAI doesn't even really make the top 5 most important progressive issues right now. flock cameras, trans rights, palestine, ukraine, blm, abortion; that's already 6 issues that I'd rank higher straight off the dome. if you're doing serious activism for any of those causes then you're "on my side" whatever you think of ai. to be absolutely clear i hate ai and I do think there are great environmental and economic reasons to fight it at every stage and in every way, and i will discourage my allies from using it, but they are still my allies!! I am sick of the way certain online progressives purge each other for heterodoxy on the eighteenth party plank. Sick. Of. It.
