A centrifugal pump requires the least power at start-up when the discharge valve is closed (or nearly closed).
Why?
At zero or very low flow:
✅ Hydraulic load is minimal.
✅ Required shaft power is at its lowest.
✅ The motor accelerates more easily.
✅ Mechanical stress on the pump is reduced.
Recommended sequence
Verify suction valve is fully open.
Close (or nearly close) the discharge valve.
Start the motor.
Allow the pump to reach rated speed.
Slowly open the discharge valve to the required flow.
Important
Never start a centrifugal pump with the suction valve closed.
This can quickly lead to dry running, overheating and severe mechanical damage.
