📘 Lecture 1: Mastering IELTS & TOEFL Reading — Skimming vs. Scanning 🎯
Welcome to Lecture 1 of our exam preparation series! Today, we delve into the core difference between Skimming and Scanning—the two fundamental techniques required to tackle long, complex texts under strict time constraints in both IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT.
1️⃣ Skimming: Reading for the Big Picture (Gist)
Skimming means reading a text rapidly to get a general overview of the topic, structure, and main ideas without stopping for details or unknown vocabulary.
When to use it: At the beginning of a passage, or when answering questions like Matching Headings (IELTS) or Main Idea / Summary questions (TOEFL).
How to do it effectively:
Read the Title and Subheadings to establish context.
Read the entire First Paragraph (Introduction) carefully.
Read the First Sentence (Topic Sentence) of every body paragraph—this usually contains the central point of that paragraph.
Read the Final Sentence of the last paragraph (Conclusion).
2️⃣ Scanning: Searching for Specific Information
Scanning means sweeping your eyes quickly over the text to locate specific data, numbers, names, or keywords without reading every sentence.
When to use it: When answering direct questions like Factual Information (TOEFL) or Short Answer / Gap Fill / True-False-Not Given (IELTS).
How to do it effectively:
Identify Keywords in the question prompt (e.g., proper nouns, dates, percentages, technical terms).
Keep the target word in your mind and move your eyes rapidly across the lines (top to bottom, or left to right).
Do NOT stop to read the context until your eyes hit the specific target word or its close synonym.
Once found, read 1–2 sentences around the keyword to verify the answer.
3️⃣ Comparison: Skimming vs. Scanning
Skimming: Focuses on Main Concepts & Flow | Speed: Fast | Goal: Understand topic structure
Scanning: Focuses on Specific Facts & Details | Speed: Very Fast | Goal: Locate exact data
💡 Practice Exercise for Today
Take any academic article:
Spend 1 minute skimming to identify the main topic of each paragraph.
Formulate 3 specific questions (e.g., "In what year did X occur?").
Spend 30 seconds scanning the passage to pinpoint the answers.
