The brain values a reward more when it has to wait a little for it.
When gratification is instant, the pleasure can fade quickly. But when you look forward to a trip, a purchase, a meetup, or a major achievement, positive emotions kick in well before the event itself.
Anticipation lets you mentally revisit that future reward, picture the details, and stretch out the enjoyment. Sometimes, weeks of anticipation deliver a stronger emotional high than the single day you spent all that time planning for.
However, waiting too long can backfire. The more perfectly you build an event up in your mind, the harder it is for reality to live up to your expectations.
In the end, our joy often comes from more than just what we get—it comes from all the time spent knowing it was right around the corner.
