InvestGame Weekly Digest #36 is out – $1.2B tracked, Aug 31 – Sep 6
AI 3D is now the biggest AI category in games. VAST (Tripo AI) raised ~$446m in a Series B/B+ led by Matrix Partners China – its fourth round of 2026, larger than the other three put together. ~$744m in six months, ~$846m total, ahead of Suno ($775m) and PixVerse ($554m).
Read the cap table, not the headline: March was Alibaba and Baidu Ventures. July brought 4399, Tanwan, Giant Network. Now Perfect World, 37 Interactive and Yanqu join, and 4399 doubles down. The publishers using the tool are buying the company. NetEase ships it in two live games; Tencent, ByteDance and Microsoft run it internally.
Matrix also led Meshy's ~$400m at $1.5B six weeks ago. Same investor, both sides of the fight. VAST reportedly wanted ~$2.0B and is eyeing a Hong Kong listing as soon as 2027.
Bilibili: $700m of zero-coupon converts due 2031, $200m of it taken by Tencent. Plus a $300m buyback, $200m of which buys back Tencent's own shares so its stake stays put. Money goes to AI. Mobile games: $205m, 18% of Q2, and the only segment that shrank.
Nexus Mods bought SteamDB. 78m members and 25bn downloads acquiring a donation-funded Steam database – but what it's really buying is build and depot history for every game on Steam, so its mod manager can flag mods built for the wrong version and pin exact builds in Collections. SteamDB stays free, no paywall, no ads.
Money moving elsewhere:
HubX (Izmir, 40+ AI apps, 600m downloads) — $50m from Point72 at $1.2B pre, first outside capital ever
CreatorFi – $45m debt + equity to lend against platform revenue; $200k–$20m+ for studios on Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, mobile, no equity
Kakao Games → BackendX, ~50 AI agents turning specs into deployed backends, going to its publishing partners
Burlingame – $12m non-dilutive UA financing from PvX
Saudi NDF – $112m deployed to 82 companies since 2022
Markets: 64 companies tracked, median -1.3%. Roblox +12.4% (EU VLOP status, creators earned $1.5B in 2025). Take-Two -8.8%, off 19% from July, GTA VI leak still biting. CD Projekt beat on both lines and the stock moved 0.6% – back catalog and licensing, not new product.
