A Buddhist monk and scholar from Kucha who became one of history's most influential translators of Sanskrit Buddhist texts into Chinese. His translations of over 300 volumes fundamentally shaped the development of Chinese Buddhism and made complex Mahayana philosophy accessible to East Asian audiences. His translation methods balanced literal accuracy with literary elegance, establishing principles that influenced translation theory for centuries. His work at the imperial translation bureau in Chang'an created a new Chinese Buddhist vocabulary still used today.
