In 1532 he joined the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, which mattered because it was the gatekeeper for selling art and taking on pupils in the city. A few years later, in 1536, Antwerp held a huge entry parade for Emperor Charles V, and artists in the guild helped build the temporary arches and street decorations that made the whole city look like a theater set for a day.
