In 1900 he won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle, the huge world's fair that filled the city with new buildings, posters, and crowds. He had trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under William Bouguereau, which helps explain the smooth skin tones and polished finish you often see in his figure scenes.
