In 1926, Dorpmüller became General Director of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the German National Railway. With the rise of the NSDAP regime, he continued in his position and, in 1937, was appointed Reich Minister of Transport. After Germany’s defeat in 1945, Dorpmüller remained in office briefly under the Allied occupation until his death. He died of cancer on 5 July 1945 in Malente, Schleswig-Holstein.
