PROJECT AZORIAN — THE SHIP THAT STOLE A SOVIET SUBMARINE FROM THE ABYSS.

I opened a Cold War file that was never supposed to survive daylight.
In 1968, the Soviet ballistic-missile submarine K-129 vanished in the Pacific. Moscow searched—but failed to find it. The United States located the wreck nearly three miles beneath the surface, resting in darkness with its missiles, code material, and dead crew still inside.
Washington did not plan to photograph it.
They planned to steal it from the ocean floor.

I traced the cover operation to a ship called the Hughes Glomar Explorer. The public was told billionaire Howard Hughes was testing a revolutionary deep-sea mining vessel. That story was camouflage.
Inside the ship was a hidden chamber and a colossal mechanical capture vehicle engineered to descend approximately 16,500 feet, lock onto the submarine, and pull it into the hull without being seen.
A ship built around a secret.
A claw built around a grave.

In 1974, the recovery began while Soviet vessels watched from nearby waters, unaware of the real mission beneath them. The claw reached K-129 and started lifting.
Then the structure failed.
Part of the submarine broke away and fell back into the abyss. A section was recovered, but the full intelligence haul remains obscured by redactions. Among what came up were the bodies of six Soviet submariners. They were buried at sea with military honors—one quiet act of respect inside an operation built on deception.
