Sample Descriptive Writing

Let's try writing a perfect descriptive answer

As you can see in the image, there are two explicit demands in the question:

1. Structure of financial institutions —> This requires you to discuss their classification, hierarchy, major categories/institutions and broad functions.
2. Role in economic development —> This requires you to explain how these institutions contribute to savings mobilisation, investment, credit creation, financial inclusion, infrastructure development, MSMEs, agriculture, economic stability etc.

At this stage, you have clearly understood the demand of the question and are ready to get started.

The basic blueprint of the answer should be:
Definition → Structure → Functions/Role → Developmental Impact → Challenges/Limitations → Way Forward/Conclusion

Now, how do you frame the body?
Instead of narrowing down your answer by mentioning RBI, SEBI, NABARD, SIDBI, etc as separate points, try to categorise them into broader groups. This makes your answer more comprehensive and make your answer broader than what you want to write.

For example:
1) Regulatory/Monetary Institutions- RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA, etc.
2) Banking Institutions - PSBs, Private Sector Banks, RRBs, SFBs, Payments Banks, Cooperative Banks, etc.
3) Development Financial Institutions - AIFIs such as NABARD, SIDBI, EXIM Bank, NaBFID, etc.
4) Non-Bank Financial Intermediaries - NBFCs, MFIs, HFCs, etc.
5) Capital-Market Institutions/Intermediaries - Stock exchanges, mutual funds, depositories, etc.

You can apply the same approach to the second part of the question.

Instead of writing a few generic points on “economic development,” break it down into broader dimensions such as:
1) Capital formation and investment
2) Credit delivery and entrepreneurship
3) Agricultural and rural development
4) MSME development and employment
Infrastructure financing
5) Financial inclusion etc

This helps you to broadens the scope of your answer, allows you to cover multiple dimensions and helps you meet the word requirement as well.

Now comes the most important part.
Within each subheading, frame your points using the correct logic + example + data + linkage to the question.

For Example:
NABARD → rural credit/refinancing → agricultural investment → higher productivity and rural incomes etc

Remember, descriptive writing is not about writing everything you know or simply filling the word count.
But understanding the concept, broadening the dimensions, organising the content, establishing logical linkages, supporting arguments with relevant examples/data.

With consistent practice, you gradually train your brain to look at a question from multiple dimensions rather than from just the first perspective that comes to mind.

And at the end, it becomes instinctive, you start identifying unprecedented or less-obvious dimensions that can differentiate your answer from the average answers which can only be achieved through the consistent answer writing.
