This phrase means to endure a painful or difficult situation with courage, often because there's no other option.

Back in the days before modern anesthesia, soldiers facing surgery on the battlefield had to get a little creative. Without anything to numb the pain, doctors would hand them a bullet to bite down on during the procedure. Imagine being told, "Hey, this is going to hurt—a lot—but here, chew on this bullet, it'll help!" The poor soldier, gritting his teeth on the cold metal, would probably think, "This is the last thing I want in my mouth right now!" While this wasn’t exactly the most effective pain relief, the practice gave birth to the phrase "bite the bullet," which now means to bravely face something unpleasant or unavoidable.
