The Digital Diffusion
Online communities often exhibit a modern version of bystander apathy. When a victim is harassed on a massive public forum, individual users often scroll past, assuming that a moderator or another user will eventually report the abuse.
The sheer volume of potential helpers creates a paralysis where everyone feels their individual action is unnecessary. This leads to an ironic result where the larger the audience, the less accountability the perpetrator faces. In the digital age, a million witnesses can be just as ineffective as zero.
