Homo Sapiens — the eternally premature species
We are born with a brain that is developmentally equivalent to a chimpanzee fetus at an early stage. If evolution had allowed us to carry offspring to the same level of functional readiness as other primates, pregnancy would last 18–21 months.
However, the narrow pelvis, the price paid for bipedalism, simply would not allow such a large head to pass through the birth canal. As a result, evolution chose a compromise: we are born "raw" and helpless, to make it out before our brains become too large for our skeleton.
