FAPESP Postdoctoral Position - Call for applications

The FAPESP Thematic Project has an open Postdoctoral position to work in "The Life of a File from a Sustainability Perspective", at the University of São Paulo, São Carlos, Brazil, in collaboration with Prof. Rick Kazman, University of Hawaii/SEI, USA.
Software is created in a complex socio-technical ecosystem: software is a technical artifact, but it is created and maintained by humans. The goal of this work is to understand the various influences on a file of code---an ``atomic unit'' of software---to try to determine the factors that affect the success of that file. Success, in this context, is the degree to which that file lives and evolves and supports the mission of the system in which it is embedded, and also the degree to which it is bug-free. To understand this, we need to take a longitudinal approach to analyzing files and their roles in their larger system context.
Rather than looking at the file's code, we will focus on its context. In particular, we will ask whether the design, social, semantic, and process patterns a file participant has used have a significant effect on the file's quality.
Expected requirements of candidates:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science or related areas.
- Good experience with analyzing software repositories
- Knowledge of sustainability, including software sustainability
- Advanced English language skills
- Good publication record
This 24-month scholarship is expected to start as soon as possible, ideally in October 2026. There is also the possibility of conducting a visit (up to 12 months) at an institution abroad.
The monthly stipend is 12.000 Brazilian reais plus an additional 10% for research expenses.
