*April Fools is Not Permissible!*
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله said:
I warn my Muslim brothers against what some foolish people do with regards to April Fools' Day – and I believe it is close – this lie, which they have taken from the Jews, the Christians, the Majūs, and the people of kufr. Furthermore, it is – along with the fact that it is a lie, and lying is impermissible in Islām – also imitation of the non-Muslims and imitating the non-Muslims is prohibited: the Nabī ﷺ said:
مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ
*“Whoever imitates a people is from them.”*
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah رحمه الله said: “[This ḥadīth’s] isnād (chain of narration) is good, and the least [that imitating the kuffār] can be is impermissible, even though its apparent wording necessitates the kufr of the one who imitates them.”
