Since Moses here writes the history of the world, it is clear that his narrative is not symbolic, not allegorical, not mystical, but historical, simple and plain; and therefore what he tells about paradise, Adam, Eve, and the creation of all things successively accomplished in the space of six days, etc., are to be taken historically and properly, as they sound... Philosophy and physics must be adapted to Holy Scripture and the Word of God, from Whom all number, order, and mode of nature arises, says St. Augustine. Conversely, Holy Scripture should not be twisted to adapt to the opinions of philosophers, or to the light and dictation of nature.
