🧊 Ethereum drafts a deposit contract with no way back

On August 24 a draft of a new validator deposit contract landed in the proposals repository. The current one is hardwired to a single signature scheme: public keys of exactly 48 bytes. The new one accepts keys and metadata of up to 8,192 bytes and asks every deposit to declare which scheme it uses.

Scheme zero is today’s signature. The other identifiers are still empty: what a quantum-resistant validator key looks like is left to a separate proposal. The part that matters is elsewhere — the contract has an irreversible retirement mode: after one system call it stops accepting deposits with the old keys, and nothing can switch them back on.
